Where is this year going. It seems like it was only a few days ago we were setting drill on the field. Now we are preparing for our Christmas Concert tonight. Football season flew by, even though we made it to the third round of playoffs. Time is goinging by faster and faster. Let me encourage you to take time to slow down and enjoy the Christmas season with the ones that matter. I am looking forward to slowing down and spending time with my grand daughter. Take some time and reflect on the past year and what you can do to make 2017 the best year of your life.

Schools is starting for us tomorrow. It can be a scary time for all students involved from the freshman to the senior. The freshman is coming from middle school in to the world of high school and the senior is looking forward to graduation and entering the world. Being a part of something is an easy way to alleviate some of the anxiety. Being a band director, of course, I am going to push the marching band. Being a part of the marching band you have a built in family within the school. Band members look out for each other and take care of their own. In my experience growing up the band room was always a safe haven to go to and escape the stresses of the day. I was with my friends and with others that were band "nerds" like me. In band I developed friendships that have lasted for a life time. So as the school year starts, Keep Calm and Carry On or as drummers say Keep Calm and RLRR LRLL.
What is Mr. G talking about? Well, it is pretty simple Do A Get B, Don't Do A Don't Get B. Basically, put in the hard work, time, sacrifice which is A and you will get a satisfying outcome which is B. I want to relate this to the band world if possible. We have all seen bands that sound great, have a wonderful marching band and perform at the top of their class. What we don't see is the dedication, hard work and sacrifice that is put into a successful performance. I have been involved with band programs over 30 years as a performer or director and I have not found any short cuts to success. By being dedicated and working hard satisfying performances can be achieved on every level. I want to encourage my new students too strive to be the best band members and musicians they can be. Proper preparation equals a powerful performance. All of us working toward A, will lead us together to reach our goal of B!
